Why Not Carry a Leather Money Clip?
By JPatton6782
Nearly every guy in the world
has a need to carry a wallet or a money clip. A men’s leather wallet or leather
money clip is a fashion accessory similar to a purse for a female. You can’t carry change in a wallet but you
can certainly carry credit cards and paper money. You are going to find that different styles
offer different levels of convenience depending upon your lifestyle. Hopefully I can help you make your
decision. If you’re ever bought a wallet
or money clip you didn’t like, you appreciate how this is a small but important
decision.
I personally become somewhat attached to my wallet. It’s almost a part of me. I probably use my
wallet 10 times each day. It is critical
that what I use is functional for me.
When I first started shopping for wallets when I was younger, I couldn’t
believe the choices I had in wallets. It
was almost daunting. I didn’t know what
I wanted and probably went though a dozen wallets in my teens. It continued in to my 20’s as well.
I went through phases of
wearing jeans, wearing suits, then mostly sweats and shorts and I’m back in to
wearing jeans again. Each style created different issues with carrying a
wallet. I remember when I had to have a
black leather wallet. Then I went in to
a phase where money clips were all I would carry. I had a leather money clip
that went everywhere with me. Once I
needed to start carrying more cards, the money clip went away. When I was in suits every day, I carried a
large wallet. When in jeans, the large
wallet didn’t work.
Leather Money Clip
The money clip is a fashion accessory that was traditionally a sign of an affluent male with layers of 20’s or 100’s. You don’t need to carry anything very large if you aren’t carrying a wad of 1 dollar bills! A money clip will do well with the basic cards you might need too. Two 20’s sandwiching your driver’s license and a credit card and you’re ready for about 90% of your needs. Its more of an accessory for a night on the town than it is a traveling businessman. It just doesn’t hold enough ‘stuff’ to be functional for someone on the go, in airports, traveling overseas, etc.
The Billfold Wallet
The simple billfold style is the most popular version of a wallet and in my opinion, the most versatile. It works with a suit and works nicely with jeans as well. You can put someone’s business card in it without having to fold it. Money comes out more easily as there is only 1 fold in this type of wallet rather than two. I was not a fan of the trifold wallet. That extra fold in the money drove me crazy! One issue with the classic bill fold wallet is there is no way to store coins. That’s the case with most wallets however. Coins are always a problem for men. You can find a billfold wallet with little coin pouch, but be warned that not many coins fit in the pocket and your wallet can get pretty fat very quickly. Not very comfy when you are wearing jeans.
The Slimfold Wallet
People that wear tight fitting cloths might find a billfold too large. Even peole that wear designer type suits
might find this the case as well. It can
create a lump in your lines that people find unacceptable. If you wear extremely whispy or light fabric
clothing, you might find the same problem. The remedy for you might be a
slimfold wallet. Basically, they are the
same thing as a regular billfold but don’t hold as much. Don’t plan on putting 10 credit cards in to a
slim fitting wallet. It’s just not going
to happen. No way you will get a coin
slot in a slim fitting wallet either. It’s
a bit of a transition between a billfold and a standard money clip.
What To Do?
My suggestion is to have a few wallets in your arsenal. I personally have a leather credit card wallet that will do credit cards and bills effortlessly for when I am traveling. I have a briefcase with me frequently when traveling and that briefcase won’t leave my side so I tend to store it in the briefcase. For casually running around town on a Saturday evening, I won’t go without my money clip wallet. I don’t like the bulk of a billfold in my jeans and just don’t have the need to carry several cards. A couple cards and some 20’s and I’m ready to go.
Don’t be cheap and try to do it all with one wallet. Its not worth it. You’ll find things much easier if you have a couple options. Hey, most women have several purses right? Most men have traditionally only carried one wallet but that’s our mistake. Get a couple. Get something fashionable. You’ll be happy you did.
